BOOK REVIEW: GIRL AGAINST THE UNIVERSE BY PAULA STOKES

2.5 stars

Eh. 🤷‍♀️

First and foremost, my rating has more to do with my personal enjoyment of this book , or lack thereof, than what I thought about the actual quality of its story.

I really have nothing against this book; I just thought it was pretty average. Thing is, I've been reading a lot of YA contemporaries lately, and at some point, they all just start to blur together. It takes a lot for me to like a contemporary now. And what makes contemporaries even harder to rate is that it's not always about the content per se—I love cute romantic tropes as much as the next person—but more about the execution. I might dislike one book with a trope and love another book with exactly the same trope. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, Girl Against the Universe was a miss for me as far as contemporaries go. I liked the exploration of PTSD and the focus on therapy, but as a reader, the story just didn't get a lot out of me emotionally. Maguire was a boring protagonist and Jordy was fine, I guess? Like I said, this was just average. I didn't dislike it so much as I didn't find enough about it to like.
